Business developmentforMontgomery AEC firms.
BD-AEC is an embedded, fractional business development director for Montgomery architecture, engineering, and construction firms. Your engineers bill $300 an hour, so they should not be running your pipeline. We run it, one market at a time, with the relationships that win state, defense, and industrial work before the RFQ ever drops.
The Montgomery market
Who buys design and construction here
Montgomery is a small, concentrated AEC market where government and defense set the table. About 110 design and construction firms compete here, including 64 engineering firms, and the state capital, an Air Force education hub, and an auto plant drive more of that demand than private development ever does.
Montgomery buys design and construction as the seat of Alabama state government first. The new Alabama State House, a $325 million, 460,000 square foot building on track for a fall 2026 opening, is the first new state house built in the country since 1977, and the state Finance Department's Division of Construction Management administers state-funded work at governmental facilities from its Washington Avenue offices. Defense is the second engine: Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex host Air University, the Air Force's center for professional military education, and more than 30 tenant units, with a military economic impact of roughly $2.6 billion a year, while the 187th Fighter Wing converted from F-16s to F-35s at Dannelly Field and the 908th, Alabama's only Air Force Reserve wing, retrained on the MH-139 Grey Wolf. Industry supplies the rest, led by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and roughly $3.4 billion of plant investment across 16 expansions, Meta's Montgomery data center at more than $1.5 billion and nearly 1.3 million square feet, and Manna Capital Partners' $600 million beverage complex.
It's a small AEC town, and a tightly held one. Goodwyn Mills Cawood was founded here in 1947, still headquarters here with more than 650 people across a dozen offices, and designed Montgomery Whitewater; Caddell Construction runs a global federal practice out of Dexter Avenue downtown; and Sherlock, Smith & Adams has been designing here since 1946. With only about 110 design and construction firms in the whole metro, the field isn't crowded so much as it's spoken for: the same state agency owners, base facilities offices, and county officials recur on job after job, and selection runs on who they already trust, not the low number from a name they don't know.
That concentration is exactly why a fractional BD director earns its keep here. State agency work, base and Guard construction, plant and data center projects, ALDOT programs, all of it runs on relationships that take years to build, and a principal who's billable can't build them on the side. Montgomery is also underserved by dedicated BD talent, so a director whose whole job is working those owners and program managers stands out fast in a market where everyone already knows everyone.

Why us, here
Why a fractional BD director in Montgomery
Montgomery is one of the select major markets BD-AEC takes on beyond its home corridor, and it's a market built for this model. In a metro this small and this concentrated, work flows to the firms the state agencies, the base facilities offices, and the county owners already trust, and those relationships take years to build. A dedicated fractional director who's out working those owners and program managers, week after week, is the way into a market where a billable principal simply can't do the same on the side.
By policy, BD-AEC represents one firm per discipline, project type, and market, an ethical line that protects every client's pipeline. In a market as small as Montgomery, that matters even more: it means an exclusive BD partner who'll never walk your relationships across the street to a competitor chasing the same state, Maxwell, or Hyundai work.
Questions
Straight answers
Does BD-AEC work the Montgomery market?
Yes, as one of the select major markets we take on beyond our home corridor. We won't pretend to have a Montgomery office or to know every local owner by name from down the street, that wouldn't be honest. What we bring is a dedicated fractional director who works the state agencies, the base and Guard programs, and the industrial and public owners for you directly, and builds the relationships in a small market where everyone knows everyone.
What kind of AEC firms do you represent in Montgomery?
Principal-led architecture, engineering, and construction firms, roughly $1M to $20M in revenue, whose senior people are too valuable to spend their week on business development. By policy we take only one firm per discipline, project type, and market, so we never represent two competitors.
How is a fractional BD director different from hiring a salesperson?
A salesperson cold-calls. A fractional BD director is an embedded, senior partner who owns your pipeline: the strategy, the relationships, the teaming, and the pursuit. You get the expertise of a six-figure BD hire without the full-time salary line.
So much of Montgomery's work is state and federal. Can a smaller firm really break in?
Yes, but not by underbidding. State work runs through the Finance Department's Division of Construction Management and its open-end agreements, and base work moves through federal facilities offices and prime teams, so being prequalified and known counts for more than the low number. We position your firm with the agency owners, program managers, and primes who assemble those teams, so you're the known quantity when the work comes up, not the stranger on the outside.
